PROJECT OVERVIEW

My project was one that I had planned specifically for the edge project but to also take initiative in my business. I had planned to clean up the back of my store by creating an organizes system for my inventory. My business is one of providing nuts and bolts, power tools, and other construction and industrial supplies to other companies throughout the region of Cedar City.

PROJECT DETAILS

The system that I created to help organize included new shelving and boxes to put on the shelves so that everything became neatly organized, looks uniform, and gave my employees an easier time to find such product. Now that this is organized, I have created a system for our employees to continue to manage and upkeep any other inventory that needs to be staged and stored in the back of our store. This has saved time to find and put away inventory which has given all of us more time to focus on selling to our customers.

PROJECT REFLECTION

Through this leadership and inventory project, I learned valuable lessons pertaining to both. Leadership is something more rewarding than management. Though leadership I was able to share my vision of a goal and for the entire store and coworkers. This vision, as correctly shared with my teammates, was able to be instilled into all my coworkers to collaborate more effectively for a project well done. I found that I am a servant type leader or one who does the work along with my teammates. I found that I enjoy finding ways to inspire and influence those around me in a better more productive way. I grew to enjoy the company of those I work with as we completed a project together.

Inventory Within Organizations

My project was one that I had planned specifically for the edge project but to also take initiative in my business. I had planned to clean up the back of my store by creating an organizes system for my inventory. My business is one of providing nuts and bolts, power tools, and other construction and industrial supplies to other companies throughout the region of Cedar City.

The inspiration of this project came from a physical pain which then lead to a stressful environment. This physical pain came from tripping over the clutter of inventory in the back of my shop at my business. This was getting out of hand because our customers would want one item, so we would get them one out of a pack of six or twelve, then throw the rest on the ground. This showed me that my teammates and coworkers never took the initiative to pick up after themselves. This caused lots of stress especially in a messy work environment. I then decided to put everything in order which has helped tremendously.

Leadership is something more rewarding than management, because of the effect you can see of leadership on a team.

The project idea sounded simple enough. Buy several sizes of boxes to put the inventory into a neat and clean box then organize according to size and weight. While the idea itself was simple, the act of gathering all the product, see where it belonged, how often it was used, and its size and weight took a lot longer than expected. One of the challenges that occurred was we ran out of the labels to name the product and the quantity in each box. Therefore, we had a delay of a couple days while waiting for more labels to come. This showed that we didn’t fully understand the magnitude of the project which caused some headache but did unify the team in realizing that everyone makes mistakes.

This project was a huge benefit to me as I learned more about myself, my leadership techniques, and the way I handle people. However, I realized that this project helped the team just as much. Some of my teammates are not the kind to normally accomplish a task without first being asked, but because of the magnitude of such a project, and them wanting to be done with this job, they took some initiative to help when not asked. One teammate especially took the time to set up the shelving without being asked which saved the whole team a lot of time.

Through this leadership pathway of a project, this will impact me to work effectively with teams in the future. Whether they be entrepreneur teams, or teams in the work place, I plan to use this knowledge and bettered skill to establish productive goals, plans and habits. Something that I didn’t know before accomplishing this project is how difficult it can be to work with others, but also to share a vision and goal for every teammate to accomplish and feel a part of a team. This project has really helped me realize the importance of leadership while working with the teams, rather than just managing and sitting back while letting everyone else accomplish the work. This gives me a sense of accomplishment through my own work, and it shows my team that I am there to help and do the work alongside of them.
